I'm thinking of hanging up my molds and my brush for a while.
Last week I didn't have a free evening with work, and this week I don't have one with kid-related stuff, and I just don't feel like trying to shoehorn in yet another thing into my life right now. This Saturday I'll get in a gaming session with my once-a-season gaming group, but I haven't got one in for my "should be better than once-a-season but often isn't" group in a while.
I know that I'm not the only one in this situation. In a conversation I once had with Bruce Hirst, he admitted that summer was the worst season, and that he frequently tried to release interesting molds during this time.
So, a little vacation from my hobbies, perhaps mixed with a seasonal cleaning of my worktable. I haven't bought D&D 4e yet, and don't know if I will for a while. Reviews have been solidly mixed, so I may wait and see what distills out of it over time. I'm also looking at Paizo's Pathfinder, although I find it funny that I played a 2.5 D&D clone during 3e, and I'm thinking about a 3e clone during 4e. Always one step behind, that's me.
Okay, I was wrong; we got a foot of snow.
Or damn near to it. It has been falling heavily all day, and despite my going out and shoveling the walk you wouldn't know it now. On top of the snow is 30 mph winds, and they've called a Level 2 or 3 Snow Emergency for the county (the discrepancy is in who calls to tell me this as they inquire as to whether we will have church tomorrow).
So, being stuck inside means getting some odds and ends done. The kids are bouncing on the mini-trampoline in the playroom while listening to a CD a friend of mine made for them of her reading The Witches by Roald Dahl. I finished up one terrain piece, perhaps the first of several I might get done today at this rate.
In other news, I saw a think on The Miniatures Page where a gaming club in PA was hosting a Hordes tournament to support the local animal shelter. Now I'll tell you, this really got my Premise Beach-o-meter going, because a) I like animals, b) I like wargaming, and c) I like the idea of my hobby being something beneficial to society.
Like all Premise Beach ideas (or most of them) I'll probably let this one go, but man I like the idea A LOT.
Okay, I did in fact get another piece done. Here's the pic:
All over the weather forecast it is "up to a foot of snow!" It isn't there yet, but the snow has been falling steadily all day. My daughter was sick (again) and so we mostly kicked around the house. I listened to The Bourne Betrayal on CD, baked cheddar biscuits, and finished construction on the second of my catwalks. I won't bother posting a picture yet; it looks just like the first one.
I also read the new issue of Fictional Reality, which featured a terribly clever Hirst Arts project. Unfortunately for me, it is pretty big. The idea was to create a multi-room dungeon in a single piece. Then he built a mountain "case" for the dungeon to drop into. I realized that one could create multiple dungeons to drop into the case. But like I said, at about 18" a side, you'd need almost 30 casts of the floor tile alone to make a dungeon with essentially one layout.
I don't know why, but I got a yen for doing a sci-fi piece. Odd, given how much fantasy gaming I've been doing. Anyways, I've finished the build--it just needs to be painted.
